Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Concludes Official Visit to Kuwait

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping, has concluded an official visit to the State of Kuwait at the invitation of the Kuwaiti Government.

During the visit which took place from 6 to 8 October 2012, the Chairperson was received by the Emir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al- Sabah; the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

The two sides discussed the preparations underway for the upcoming Third Africa-Arab Summit, which will be hosted by Kuwait in 2013.

Chairperson Ping stressed the importance of this Summit for both Africa and the Arab world, which he said “are linked by geography, history and common culture”. He pointed out that the AUC and the League of Arab States are working closely with the Government of the State of Kuwait to ensure the success of this Summit and to deepen the relations between the continent and the Arab world.

The Chairperson seized the opportunity to bid farewell to the Emir of Kuwait, the Prime Minister as well as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, in anticipation of the end of his tenure in office on 15 October 2012.

He thanked the Kuwaiti Leadership for their constant support to Africa, particularly through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and expressed the hope that “the upcoming summit will boost cooperation between both parties in vital areas such as trade and investment, economic partnership and issues pertaining to peace and security”.

The Kuwaiti leadership thanked the Chairperson for his commitment to Africa-Arab solidarity which he demonstrated during his tenure in office. In this context, they registered their appreciation for his key role in revitalizing and consolidating Africa-Arab Cooperation through, among other things, the organization of the 2nd Africa-Arab Summit in 2010 after an interval of 33 years and commencing preparations for the 3rd Summit.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs hosted a working luncheon in honor of the Chairperson and his delegation, during which they held fruitful discussions on preparations for the 3rd Africa-Arab Summit. Several Kuwaiti officials took part in the luncheon, including the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the Managing Director of the Kuwait Investment Authority as well as Kuwait’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Observer to The African Union.

During the occasion the Chairperson recalled the Brainstorming meeting between representatives of the Government of the State of Kuwait, AUC and the League of Arab States held in Cairo, Egypt from 5 to 6 October and conveyed the joint proposal of the African Union Commission and the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States to convene the 3rd Africa-Arab Summit in November 2013.

It was agreed that the date, theme and other technical aspects of the Summit be decided during the planned meeting of the Coordination Committee in Addis Ababa in November 2012.

Chairperson Ping was accompanied during his visit to Kuwait by some AUC Officials, including his Chief of Staff.
